Luxury Without the Charter: The Rise of Semi-Private Aviation

(01)

For most travellers, air travel has traditionally meant either commercial airlines or private aviation.

While commercial airlines offer scheduled flights with individual seats available to the public, private aviation encompasses several options, including chartering an entire aircraft, outright or fractional ownership, and jet card or membership programmes.

In recent years, another sector has been gaining traction:semi-private aviation. These services allow travellers to purchase individual seats on flights that offer some of the conveniences associated with private aviation, without the cost of chartering an entire aircraft. Below, we take a closer look at how semi-private aviation works, who it appeals to, and whether it might be the right fit for your next journey.

What is semi-private aviation?

A semi-private flight is essentially a private aircraft, often a regional jet or turboprop, that allows anyone from the public to purchase a single seat aboard. While there are many different ways semi-private companies are structured, it offers a simple online buying experience similar to commercial flights coupled with a more luxury flight experience similar to private flights. The flight’s operating cost is shared among the passengers. Travelers experience many of the benefits of traveling on a private plane, but for a substantially lower cost than chartering a private jet. Some companies allow passengers to book single tickets, while others require annual membership fees to access their planes.

These companies run on fixed schedules based on what they deem to be the market demand; they are not bespoke itineraries.

Why would someone choose a semi-private flight?

Travelers on semi-private flights enjoy many of the same perks as those flying privately, including a more streamlined check-in and security process, access to smaller airports, and luxury amenities onboard, such as spacious seating and high-quality food and drink. A semi-private flight is significantly less expensive than chartering an entire jet while offering more privacy than a commercial flight, as there are typically fewer than 30 passengers onboard, and sometimes fewer than 10. Depending on the route, semi-private flights can even be less expensive than business or first-class seats on a commercial airline.

Many semi-private flights also allow pets to travel in the cabin rather than in the cargo hold, a major advantage for many pet owners. Families with young children often choose this option as well, avoiding the hassle of navigating major airport security with little ones while enjoying extra space and a more relaxed travel experience.

What are the drawbacks of choosing a semi-private experience?

The main drawbacks are reduced privacy and flexibility compared to private travel. A semi-private flight includes other passengers, and departures operate on a fixed schedule to accommodate everyone onboard. With a private charter, the person chartering the aircraft controls the guest list and can often adjust the departure time if needed. There are also far fewer routes and scheduled departures than those offered by commercial airlines, and naturally, less flexibility than comes with booking a private jet.

Where can I book a semi-private flight?

There are many operators offering this service now, with new companies entering the space frequently. Some of the most established are Aero, Blade, JSX, Tradewind Aviation, XO, and Surf Air.

Popular routes include New York/Miami, Los Angles/Las Vegas, New York/Palm Beach, San Francisco/Napa, and Los Angeles/Cabo.

Why are semi-private flights growing in popularity?

The media recently has been filled with news about airport delays, cancellations, badly behaved travellers, and poor customer service. To avoid this, many individuals who historically chose commercial flights are now exploring semi-private options. Frequent flyers are seeking more certainty, and while any flight can still be disrupted by weather or operational issues, semi-private services often offer fewer delays and a more streamlined experience overall. Many travellers who typically fly business or first class find that semi-private options can offer a better overall experience at a comparable price point, particularly when traveling with pets or young children.

As awareness of carbon footprints and sustainability continues to grow, some private jet users are choosing semi-private flights whenever practical. However, for many, the reduced privacy and fixed schedules make this impossible, particularly when flexibility and discretion are priorities.

How much do semi-private flights cost?

As with all travel, prices vary greatly depending on route, season, and operator. JSX offers flights for as low as $249 for quick trips such as Burbank to Napa. New York to Miami on the same operator is about $700. Others offer flights for $1500+. Many operators require annual membership fees to book.
